Why Buy A FiOS Gateway Router?

best fios router

So, why would you want to purchase one of the Verizon Fios compatible routers? The truth of the matter is that the answers are endless. As mentioned above, there are many benefits associated with owning your own router. First and foremost, you should understand that buying your own router gives you complete control. You can choose the specific router that you want with the specifications that you need. If you stick with the ISP’s router, you really have no options at all.

You can always upgrade to a tri-band router or one with additional ports and settings. If you want the freedom to pick and choose, you need to turn down the ISP’s router and invest in your own. Another great thing about purchasing your own router is the fact that you’ll be able to save yourself money. You’ll normally be able to skip the ISP’s monthly rental fee. That could keep a lot of money in your wallet at the end of each year.

Finally, you may actually get a better performance with your own router. So, investing in your own router is something that everyone should consider.

Some Precautions

Before purchasing a Verizon Fios modem, you will need to take some precautions. First and foremost, you must understand that not all routers will be compatible with your Internet Service Provider. Therefore, you’re going to need to do a little bit of research. Find a few good routers and contact your ISP. Ask them whether or not the routers are compatible with their service. Do not purchase any router, until you’re absolutely positive that the router works with your Internet service provider. If you make the wrong choice, you’ll regret it dearly.

At the same time, you must remember that routers aren’t the easiest things to setup. If you not a tech savvy individual, there is a good chance that you’re going to have trouble getting your router up and running. Some routers are more complicated than others. Take your time and consider all of your options to ensure you get a router that suits your skill level. You may also need to call the ISP to authenticate the router.

Adding A Router To Your Network

There are several ways to upgrade your router. If you want the easiest method, you should keep your Verizon router and turn it to bridge mode. This will give you the ability to connect your new router, without needing to get rid of the existing one. This is easier, but it doesn’t offer the perks of getting rid of the Verizon router all together.

Things To Consider When Shopping for best router for FiOS Gigabit

When attempting to invest in a replacement router, you’ll need to take a wide variety of factors into consideration. If you do not take your time and do your research, you’ll probably regret it in the future. You may not get a compatible router or you might get one with a decreased performance. It is absolutely to consider the factors below when choosing a router.

  • Speeds

There is no doubt that you’re going to want lightning fast speeds. After all, you’re going to be streaming high-definition videos and playing video games online. Unless you have good speeds, your connection is going to be slow and sluggish. With this in mind, you should pay close attention to the router’s speeds. Make sure that it’ll be able to deliver speeds that will satisfy the entire family.

  • Range

Range is equally important. After all, you’ll need to deliver a connection to your entire home. If you live in a huge home, you’ll need a very powerful router. You might even need to invest in a range extender. Just make sure you choose a router that deliver satisfactory range. Otherwise, you’ll experience dead zones and connection drops.

  • Guest Network

Do you intend to let your guests use your Internet connection when they visit? If so, you will not want to give them your Wi-Fi username and password. Instead, you should consider investing in a router with a guest network. This will allow you to create a separate network for your guests and you’ll be able to avoid giving them your password.

  • Beamforming Technology

It is also a good idea to choose a router with beamforming technology. This might seem like a major factor, but it can make a huge difference. A router with beamforming technology will be able to deliver a far better signal. Beamforming ensures that you’re able to create a stronger, more reliable and much faster connection. It is really in your best interest to choose a router with beamforming technology.

  • USB Ports

While you’re at it, you should realize that most routers will come with USB ports. Having a router with multiple USB ports can be enormously beneficial in the future. This will give you the ability to connect an external hard drive or flash drive to your network. Then, everyone on your network will be able to access the files on those devices. This can be a great way to collaborate or just ensure your family has accessed to movies that have been downloaded in the past. You can also use the USB port to connect a printer to your network.

  • QoS

You’ll definitely want to make sure that your computer receives most of the router’s resources when you’re streaming HD videos on Netflix. This is why you should choose a router that is equipped with Quality of Service or QoS. This specific feature gives you the ability to dedicate more resources to specific applications. This could make a huge difference. Nevertheless, QoS isn’t something that everyone needs. With that in mind, you should consider your options and determine whether or not you really need it.

  • LAN Ports

You’ll also need to figure out precisely how many LAN ports your computer needs. The LAN port is used to connect your computer or another device to the router via an Ethernet cable. Generally, devices that are connected directly to the router will receive a better connection and faster speeds. A lot of devices actually require a LAN port. This is often true for smart devices. Therefore, you should most definitely think about buying a router with at least two or more LAN ports. This will ensure that you have plenty of ports for all of your devices.

The Standard

It should be known that there are tons of Wi-Fi standards. At this important in time, the newest is AC. This specific standard is compatible with all of the older models. There is the B/G/N and AC. It is important to understand that AC is compatible with pretty much any device. Nevertheless, this won’t help you, if you are still using Wireless-N devices. You’ll only receive the performance that you would get from a Wireless-N router. Nevertheless, it is wise to be prepared for the future. Therefore, you should definitely invest in an 802.11AC router.

Brand Name Is Important

When looking for a router, there is a good chance that you’re going to stumble across a few names that you know. Linksys and NetGear are two of the most common. You’ve likely heard of these names at some point or another. It is in your best interest to choose a brand name that you’re familiar with. This won’t always mean that you get a good router, but it can definitely help.

Consider The Size Of Your Home

If you are not tech savvy, you may be under the impression that every Wi-Fi router is designed for all homes. This is a major misconception that leaves consumers baffled when they invest in routers that are unable of keep up with their Internet usage. With this said, before you purchase a new router to replace your existing one or for a new home network, you should take the time to collect measurements of your living area.

Now, you may be forced to fork out more money for a quality router capable of supplying full coverage for your home. Small and more affordable routers are designed for apartments, condos and single-story houses.

In addition to the size of your living space, you must take the number of barriers in your home into consideration. For instance, the number of walls in your house will determine the strength of your Wi-Fi connection. Concrete, brick and metal walls and ceilings can prevent the signal from reaching into rooms and other areas of your home, leading to dead spots.

A larger router, with three or more external antennas will ensure full Wi-Fi coverage. If you reside in a small apartment or condo, you will not be so concerned about distance. However, you will still want speedy “throughput capabilities.” Only consider investing in a router that delivers excellent throughput in both midrange and near situations.

Top Notch Security

If you have been watching the recent news reports you have probably heard about all the things that hackers are doing online these days. If they aren’t cracking into high security websites they are breaking into video game platforms. Unfortunately, with all the technology and malware out there this leaves the average individual pretty vulnerable. This is why it is completely necessary for you to have a router that will provide you with the encryption that you need to keep you safe at all times. This is especially true if you are constantly shopping online or using your network for work related tasks.

When choosing a router for your FiOS network look for one that guarantees safety and comes equipped with some kind of anti-virus software. In addition to this, you want to make sure the network has a built-in firewall with some kind of guest access control. Guest access control will allow you to setup profiles for anyone using your network, so you can restrict and monitor what they are allowed to access on the network. If you want your guests to only be able to browse the Internet then you can do just that with the guest restrictions.

Enhanced Parental Control

Many new routers come equipped with enhanced parental control features that allow you to really take control of what your kids are seeing and viewing. These new advanced options allow you to filter DNS, which will keep you and your kids safe from malware, phishing, and content filtering.

Warranty

Finally, it is pertinent to consider the router’s warranty. Most routers will last several years, but some can last far longer. You’ll definitely want to make sure that your money has been spent wisely. Therefore, you should go to great lengths to ensure that your investment is protected. This is where a good warranty enters the picture. Getting a lifetime warranty is best, but not always possible. Do your best to get the longest warranty and you’ll likely be glad that you did in the near future.

About The MoCA Bridge

A MoCA Bridge is a layer two bridge, which is capable of passing ethernet frames between a coax or MOCA network and a cat5 network segment. The Actiontec and FiOS routers provided by Verizon actually contain two MOCA bridges. The MoCA WAN bridge is responsible for providing coax connectivity between the router and the ONT. The LAN bridge provides connectivity from the router to the Verizon set top box. MoCA Stands for Multimedia over Coax Alliance.

If you are subscribed to FiOS TV and own a set top box, you’ll need a MoCA LAN bridge in order to use your own router. It is possible to use third-party MoCA bridges or you can stick with the LAN bridge in the FiOS Quantum Gateway or the Actiontec. Simultaneously, a MoCA bridge is a good way to expand your network’s connectivity into rooms without a cat5 connection.

Third-Party MOCA Bridge Recommendations

There are several excellent third-party MOCA bridges that will do the trick. For your consideration, a list of the top recommendations can be found below.

Some of these devices will also act like a wireless access point.

MOCA Routers That Work As A Bridge

It is also possible to find MOCA routers that can take place of the MOCA bridge. This is a good option for people that wish to get everything they need in a single bundle. The Actiontec MI424-WR Router is a good option. These routers are often available used and they’re fairly inexpensive. Alternatively, you may want to check out the FiOS Quantum Gateway. Either router will work exceptionally well for the intended purpose.

  1. I don’t see any references to MoCA. For people who only have coax from the FiS ONT, which of these routers replace the FiOS gateway? You don’t even mention the MoCA connection n the FiOS router. TiVO loves MoCA, so I don’t even need to have an Ethernet port near my TVs.
